Bio
Joanna Lothers grew up in Lancaster, South Carolina, where she loved to draw, paint, and spend time exploring the woods near her home. In 2023, she received her BA in Painting & Drawing from Anderson University, with minors in Art History and Psychology. After graduating, she began teaching art and now serves as the Education Director for a local arts non-profit. She currently lives in Rock Hill, SC where she continues to spend her time painting and exploring the the outdoors.
Statement
Life consists of small moments and simple places—some we witness directly, and some reach us second-hand through other people. Because of this, the human experience is both uniquely individual and deeply relational. I reflect this reality in my process, beginning with plein-air studies. These are a direct record of my perception and become references for larger oil paintings. Rather than replicating reality, I translate my perception into something new that becomes part of my viewers’ understanding of the world. Each painting is a small point of connection. It represents an experience that becomes richer as it is shared.
